The Gibson Review

Critic Keith Phipps once said, "Movies are more than just those images that flicker for a couple of distracting hours then disappear... they don’t end when the lights go up."

In that spirit, we carry on the conversation with reviews, lists and a podcast.

The Gibson Review is a virtual space created by Jeff Gibson, a man who takes the thrills of film seriously and doesn’t believe that the conversation ends with: “It was good.”

ABOUT THE GIBSON REVIEW

Jeff Gibson grew up with nearly weekly movie rentals. This eventually evolved into a serious passion once the AFI released its list of the 100 Greatest Movies and, eventually, 100 Greatest Comedies. Jeff figured it wasn’t enough to see references to these movies in pop culture, he had to see them all in context and see for himself what made them so great. One thing lead to another and soon he was checking out boxes of DVDs from the library, learning about W.C. Fields, Laurence Olivier, Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard, and many many others. And also reading whatever movie guides or books by Roger Ebert or Pauline Kael he could.

After many comments from friends like, “You should be a movie critic,” Jeff launched The Gibson Review in 2010 as a means to fine-tune his writing skills to one day get a paying job as a critic. Alas, the Recession hit just before this time and the entire field of film criticism was undergoing a shift that would make it extraordinarily difficult for him to achieve that goal. So, The Gibson Review remained a passion project that has lasted for 10 years as a means for the following: 1) keep on top of every year’s releases, 2) share reviews of older movies, 3) continue the conversation after the credits roll on any movie and 4) eventually the home for a podcast with his wife, The Movie Lovers. To date, Jeff has viewed over 3,400 theatrically-released movies (over 260 days’ worth) at least once.
